About the Author: 7th Dan official FFK (French Federation of Kyokushin) since 2015 and 8th Dan Kyokushin Federation, after 45 years of Kyokushin training and practice, Bertrand Kron is one of just a few Shihan in France for this legendary style.
With a broad scope of training spanning multiple camps and events worldwide, he earned his 4th Dan from the world’s Kyokushin elite, during the renowned ‘Mitsumine’ camp in Japan; going on to receive, a 6th Dan, in 2008, directly from the European Kyokushin legend ‘Shihan Loek Hollander’!
Bertrand Kron has independently also extensively studied the biomechanics of Kyokushin, both stemming from his studies in medicine, as well as the teachings from his State Diploma Level 2.

The Bunkai featured here are the product of more than thirty years of scrutiny and analytical research by one of the most highly accomplished practitioners of Kyokushin in France.
Some, think that the Kata are for nothing more than “gradings and comps”, but does the practice of Karate Do not include a variety of components such as Kihon, Kata (and Bunkai), Kumite, and all the things that make Martial Arts different from other fighting sports?
The Kata are the very soul of Martial Arts, and as such should under no circumstance be executed merely as imaginary fights, but well and truly as real fights against virtual opponents, hence the inevitable conception of Bunkai for each sequence of a Kata.
On the journey to understanding the Bunkai, one can identify several aspects or stages of study and analysis. Kihon Bunkai is the most rudimentary stage since it focuses on analysing the basic movement of a technique in order to optimise its effectiveness and efficiency – a blocking technique therefore is to block, a striking technique to attack. Oyo Bunkai brings an additional aspect of analysis with an emphasis on adaptation from a certain interpretation of the technique, with the specifics remaining unchanged, butthat may harbour more “hidden facets”, where an attacking technique can be used to block, or the reverse.
Renraku Bunkai is the culmination of the analysis of what begins with a technical sequence and leads to actual combat. This imparts a true sense of action in a real situation with a sequence of attacks, blocks and counter-attacks. From there, a practitioner will be able to progress toward Bunkai Kumite to transcend technical limitations in order to integrate into open self-defence, the things learned through the study of… Kata?
Bunkai is the essential link between Kata and Kumite!
